How is it different From Basic Diploma in Interior Design?
We are often asked how this diploma is different From the Basic Diploma in Interior Design and Décor when the participants will still be learning about elements of design, colours, etc. A lot of DIDD graduates also say advanced diploma has digital drawings, design studio, design theory and manual drawing. So what is the difference.
Let us first explain to you why you see similarities. Have you ever tried baking? Milk, self-raising flour and water are the ingredients used to make a bread, and the same is used to make flaky, crispy croissant. Can you call them same? Exactly our point.
In interior design, like any other form of arts, you can’t change the foundation. You will obviously be learning about lighting, elements of design and colour theory. It is the perspective and treatment that will be different. In a nutshell, the difference lies in the kind of spaces you conceptualize, design and draw. Advanced diploma focusses on multi-function spaces and commercial spaces – within residential space, designing a multi-function kitchen will be included. Then, creating commercial/business spaces such as a boutique or a workspace/office space will make the main design projects.
Who should attend the course?
- Those who have successfully completed the Basic Diploma in Interior Design and Décor, offered by IVS-CEP
- Anyone who has prior education or experience of design – this could be a bachelors level degree in Engineering, Textile design, Fine Arts, Communication Design or Interior Design
- Those who are running their Emerging, amateur or practicing Architects who have not studied interior design as part of their academic training but now want to integrate ID in their professional practice
- Those who are engaged in Interior Design enterprise or consulting but have not acquired any certification/degree. In addition to the registration form, they will need to submit their portfolio of work
- Those who want to make a switch in career From one design field to Interior Design.
What are the job prospects?
The field is multi-disciplinary, booming and inviting multiple levels of jobs. With a year-long conceptual and practical training (Basic and Advanced Diploma), you have a fairly solid foundation to start your career. Undertaking an internship or apprenticeship helps in building profile and portfolio, but you can also look at full time or part time jobs or independent projects.
Following titles indicate career directions within the Interior Design field:
- Residential design consultant
- Design project administrator
- Interior Stylist
- Colour Consultant
- Real Estate Staging Consultant
- Draftsperson
- Visual Merchandiser
If your repertoire of skills and knowledge is really sound, then fields such as that of production design, art production, events and stage design, hospitality, entertainment, tourism and construction are all in demand of people who can conceptualize, visualize and operationalize spaces that they communicate and come to life.

Canva is a cool invention and provides a great range of templates. However, using Canva well does not mean you can conceptualize your own design, image or logo. You may ask, what is the need when you have so many apps and programmes like Canva? The answer is fairly simple – becoming a graphics designer or concept artist entails more than what any of these apps offer. Translating an idea into an image is a powerful tool and should be learned well.
This course will teach you the principles of graphic design: image making, typography, composition, working with colour and shapes. All graphics design courses focus on these skills as they are commonly required in practice and the industry. So, what sets IVS-CEP course apart? Well, in addition to learning these skills. You will MAKE the design, think about what you want to represent or communicate through that design that you make. In the rapidly growing industry and digital media overload, the only way to excel, progress and make your own mark is to be able to create and communicate.
- At the end of this course, you will:
- Know how to explore and investigate visual representation through a range of Image-making techniques;
- Understand basic principles of working with shape, color and pattern;
- Be exposed to the language and have learned the skills of typography;
- Understand and have applied the principles of composition and visual contrast.
- Develop a core set of graphic design skills that you can apply to your own projects, or to more deeply investigate a specialized area of graphic design.

- Early or mid-career graphics design professionals in media, advertising and pharmaceutical industry who convert designs/logos into digital images and illustrations

The series of workshops are designed to expand on the practices of diverse indigenous schools of the discipline; Indo-Persian painting Funn-e-Mussawari, known as miniature painting today.
Sadiq is known for his emphasis on deep investigation of the processes, concepts and the form within the realm of Funn-e-Mussawari. His teaching closely draws focus on learning from Mughal pedagogical models and a need to establish a relevance to contemporary teaching styles.
Each session will entail more than drawing on a surface. Participants will delve into the process of observing, sensing, and re-connecting with the self and its surroundings. These connections may take place during preparation of the surface (Wasli paper), in extracting pigments (colours) from natural sources and in the contemplation of the significance of sacred geometry, as an underlying grid, in exploration of composition. The importance of care required for undertaking each step, the contemplation and meditation through material and making; all begin a cerebral, spiritual and a visual experience in the form of painting.
The series comprises of three workshops, each focussing on an element or “Usloob”, namely:
- Siyah Qalam (Siyah = black & Qalam = brush) where the drawing is made from one colour.
- Lamp black is created through a natural material it is collected through burning a lamp under a terracotta utensil, the soot deposits finest carbon on the inside centre and sides of the utensil. It is collected through a delicate feather and mixed with gum of Keekar (Arabic gum) for making the colour black.
- Neem Rung (Neem = Partial & Rung = Colour) where the drawing is painted with one or two colours thus getting its name – neem suggests half or partial.
- Gud Rang, (Gud = Opaque & Rang = colour) where the drawing is painted with a fall range of colour. Gud is from gudla, an Urdu word which means opaque.
Participants will be introduced to the Mughal and Persian painting styles; and will have the choice to select one style for their own painting. Schedule for the second and third workshops will be announced in due course.

Of the four skills, speaking and writing are often categorized as “productive” skills while listening and reading are called “receptive.” It may be true in the strictest sense of the words, but we beg to differ. You cannot produce a good quality piece of narrative or creative writing until you are an observant person with careful listening and intensive reading. That is why our creative writing course is different from a lot of other being offered online or in person.
The course aims to develop the basic conceptual understanding and skills set required for writing gripping and appealing pieces of creative expression. Without going into a lot of definitions, the course will engage participants in the act of writing, critical analysis and reading that will help them grasp the most difficult aspect off storytelling: a strong plot. They will also learn about the craft of character development – how to create a well-rounded character while analysing what makes a character flat and boring.

- Develop a sense of what character development entails and how it should support the plot of a story
- Critique and reimagine few famous literary characters to match a defined theme or plot.
- Develop an original character based on real or imaginative characteristics
- Develop a critical approach to reading literature and finding inspiration from it for generating one’s own creative style.
What will you write?
It is a practice-based course so together; you will read and analyze texts. You will then be involved in rapid thinking and writing exercises in the beginning, and once you get into the groove, you will be writing your own short narratives (at least four of them) along with developing at least one original character and a plot.
Be ready to read aloud, share what you wrote and express your candid albeit constructive views on your peers’ work. We expect the participants to consider the course as a safe space, meant to bring improvement in the current style, without any fear of judgement, disrespect or reluctance/shyness.

Calligraphy, the art of beautiful lettering is deep rooted in eastern tradition and architecture, particularly associated with Islamic art. Ever since the trailblazing work of Sadequain closely followed Gulgee, calligraphy on canvas done with oil paints in an abstract style became a very popular art expression. Whether you go to a framer’s shop or walk into a hotel lobby, you will always spot a canvas hanging with a Quranic verse or names of Allah and Prophet calligraphed. The question is, has Sadequain made it so deceptively simple that everyone thinks they can do it or is there any technique and application that must be learned to make the canvas look appealing.
This workshop is organized as an attempt to answer this question. Mohammed Kashif Khan, a known name in the art circle of Karachi given his immense contribution in art education focused on Islamic Art, Illumination and Calligraphy. Having established Sareerul Qalam academy to promote calligraphy, Ustad Kashif continues to teach at Department of Visual Studies, Karachi University, Arts Council, IVS and is recently co-teaching a course at Habib University as well. Though a few people know, Kashif Sahab started his journey as a water colourist training under Abdul Hayee and Ustaad Rustam. While he has showcased his art nationally and internationally in group and solo shows, he is also a recipient of Sadquain Award for Calligraphy and Watercolours.
It is this experience that makes Ustaad Kashif a perfect facilitator to coach how to do calligraphy on canvas with mixed media. Join the workshop if you want to learn how to get the composition, colour combination, colour application and thickness, and the overall affect of your art piece right!

Many of us think that pottery is just about making things out of clay. We are sadly mistaken – it is as much as an art as it is a science. Preparing a glaze, getting kiln to heat up to a certain temperature, testing and retesting the impact of high or low temperature on the texture of pottery, viscosity and effect of glaze; all these processes require precision, a lot of reading and endless practice.
Glazing and Raku Firing workshop is to give you a sense of what goes behind working on pottery and ceramics. And of course, it is aimed as a precursor to our 2 month short course on Ceramics (planned for July/August 2022). This is a 3-hour workshop split into two parts.

After the process is done, the participants will work with the instructors to load the kiln. And then begins the process of heating the kiln and bringing it to the right temperature for Raku Firing to take place.
The second part of the workshop will start at 4.00pm as it takes a good three hours for the kiln to reach the required temperature with constant monitoring. Participants will complete the thermal shock process by dipping their pieces in sawdust. Once Raku firing is complete, carbon and sawdust will be cleaned to have the finished glaze Raku pottery ready for the participants to take home.
What will you do between 1pm to 3pm?
- Obviously, we don’t expect you to stare at the kiln while it is heating up. So here are your options to use up the wait time:

What you would relate to National Geographic or Readers’ Digest has become very much a part 0f all mainstream and independent media: Photojournalism. Sharing stories through photographs is not a new phenomenon; We have all heard and may be used Albert Einstien’s quote, “One picture speaks a thousand word.” So why now, what has changed? What has changed is the power of content production has become available to everyone – not just those who have fancy camera or is working as a full time journalist.
The 24×7 transmission, live coverage of events, advent of internet and social media platforms has created an immense demand for real, genuine, indigenous content, especially of human interest. Good quality camera and microphones in the mobile phones has literally made audio-visual content creation and photojournalism more approachable.
But is clicking pictures and putting catchy captions enough? The answer is a simple NO. However the tech revolution may have eased the process, there is nothing without a good story and research. Hasan Haider, with his experience of working with BBC amongst other renowned media outfits, is here to help you learn the basics.

- Concept development, finding a story, knowing your subject and getting closer
- Practice sessions to create a frame and capture the subject
- Photowalk for practice, with on-the-go mentoring from the instructor
- Basic ethics of photojournalism
- Bad habits of photographers and how to avoid them
Perks of participating in the workshop

Seher Naveed was awarded a BFA from the Indus Valley School of Art & Architecture, Karachi in 2007 and an MA in Fine Art from Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design, London in 2009. She has exhibited her work in various local and international galleries. Her work titled ‘Tip 1 & Tip 4’ was recently acquired by the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art, New Delhi, for their permanent collection. Assistant Professor
- MA Architectural Design, The University of Sheffield, Sheffield, England.
- B.Arch., Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture, Karachi, Pakistan.
- PCATP ID: A05842
Maham Khurshid is an architect, designer and research enthusiast. Her writings orchestrate satire as a theatrical commentary on spatial practices while her research and practice expand on the soliloquies of space as an opportunity for collaborative and interdisciplinary discourse.
Her work investigates the politics of power in urban narratives, sieving it through the lens of intersectionality within the domains of privilege and marginalisation. For her master's thesis, supervised by Dr. Emma Cheatle at the Sheffield School of Architecture, she drew from John Hedjuk’s Masques of Medusa as an allegory to represent the urban narrative of ‘the other side of the bridge’ in Karachi to map the socio-political and socio-economic impact of politics of power in the city.
Maham’s intention as an academic is to intertwine design learning with a conceptual and theoretical emblem. As a practising architect, she continues to explore her flair for corporate, retail and residential design in various notable projects across the city.

Khurram Khan
Assistant Professor
- BFA, Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture, Karachi, Pakistan
Farah Mahbub
Assistant Professor
- BA, University of Karachi, Pakistan
Since 1988, Farah Mahbub has been exhibiting as a visual artist in Pakistan and the international world. Equally adept in analogue printing as she is in the digital darkroom, her work traverses from documentary to digital photo-montage techniques, incorporating layers of light, shade, textures, architecture, natural objects, animals, landscapes and calligraphic text. Her visual-scapes, often unpopulated, are as dense as the multiple meanings they extend to, inspired by philosophical discourse on Sufism; insights garnered from traveling and reflections on nature in the respite of her studio.
She joined the Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture in 1997 as a faculty member, where she has been ever since. Under her tenure, photography has evolved from a single class into an undergraduate minor spanning the Communication Design and Fine Art and Interior Design departments. For Farah Mahbub, photography allows her to reconcile the rift between mindfulness and expression. Only when ideas and intuitions connect with imagery, can thought and execution become one. From this unity of value, a visual language emerges that speaks from imagination and familiarity; it speaks back to the audience, to the news, to foresight, to philosophy, to awe. As a highly personal form of communication, the image offers an open point of engagement: both the maker and the consumer seek out a confirmation of themselves through the layers of meaning that allow the image to transcend its two-dimensional limitations. Thus, the silence of the photograph cries out; but you are quiet, and so am I.

Her work uses this visual representation to consider the increasing politicisation of architecture in our cities in volatile times.
Seema Nusrat lives and works in Karachi, Pakistan. Aliya Yousuf
Assistant Professor
- M.A, Art and Design Education, Beaconhouse National University, Lahore, Pakistan
- PGD, Photography, IVS, Karachi, PK
- BFA, IVS, Karachi, PK
Aliya Yousuf, received her BFA (2003) and Postgraduate Diploma in Photography (2011) from Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture. She has also completed her Masters in Art Education from Beaconhouse University in 2020. She has participated in several residencies and her work has been exhibited in group and solo shows in Pakistan, Canada, South Korea and the UK. Primarily practicing as a ceramic sculptor, her work most often finds its basis in harmony with nature, listening to the material speak and letting the words be translated by her fingers into forms that in turn speak to the viewer. Deconstructing and then reconstructing simple familiar forms to challenge traditional views while simultaneously creating tensions through contrasts and ambiguities.
She applies a similar approach to her teaching by taking the ambiguous path of new technological developments in the fields of art making and art objects. Challenging the traditional teaching pedagogies and methodologies with recent shifts in art practices where the boundaries have been blurred between various disciplines of art & design which she tries to address in art education as well. She defines her main aspiration is to prepare the new generation for future responsibilities and success in life, by means of acquisition of the organized bodies of information and prepared forms of skills with comprehensive understanding of art making and application of craft with deep understanding characteristics of materials. She has presented these concerns in her peer reviewed paper - Indian Ocean Craft Triennial : IOTA21, AUSTRALIA.

IVS Film Festival: Celebrating the Past,
Present and Future of Pakistani Filmmakers
The Indus Valley School of Art and
Architecture to hold a film festival showcasing young talent
The
Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture (IVS) hosted a first-of-its-kind
educational Film Festival in Pakistan. The objective of the IVS Film Festival
(IVSFF) was to inspire, educate and empower the upcoming generation of
potential filmmakers by immersing them in the process of moviemaking and
exposing them to the inner workings of film production.
IVSFF
sought to leverage the new-found momentum in the Pakistani film industry
brought on by a new crop of filmmakers eager to explore novel themes and
experiment with diverse styles of storytelling. Through the festival, IVS brought
together existing members of the film community, film educators, and emerging
and aspiring filmmakers to exhibit, share, and exchange ideas and methods of
filmmaking.
IVSFF
consisted of four main components: an idea-to-screen bootcamp (a 4-day course
for A-levels/intermediate students), workshops, film screenings, and panel
discussions.
Over
250 short films were submitted by young Pakistani filmmakers and 40 were
selected for participation in the festival after a rigorous selection process.
From social commentary to dark humor, these short films covered a wide range of
genres and told stories that aren’t typically shown in the mainstream media. Film
screenings were held for audiences on September 16 and September 17. An
esteemed jury made up of filmmakers Mehreen Jabbar, Aisha Gazdar and Syed
Hisham Hasan has judged the submissions in various categories. The top films were
presented awards and cash prizes at the closing ceremony scheduled on the 17th of
September.
The
film workshops provided young artists and film enthusiasts a rare opportunity
to learn From the best talent in the field. Led by film industry giants like
Rana Kamran, Nabeel Qureshi and Naveed Arshad, these workshops are designed to
engage participants with practical exercises and give insights into the
technical side of filmmaking. There are workshops on Cinematography, Direction,
Production Design, Sound Design, Production of Short Films, Color Grading and
Post Production. They ran on the 16th and 17th of
September.
Each
day of the film festival concluded with a riveting panel discussion comprising

Endless Journey - an Exhibition by Graduates of Mphil in Art & Design
Koel Gallery
KOEL Gallery held an exhibition by the first graduates of M.Phil. in Art & Design, IVS, on August 22, 5:00 - 8:00 pm.
And an Artist Talk ‘SADIA SALIM in conversation with Adeela Shah, Babar Sheikh & Quratulain Qamar Choudry’, on Friday, August 25, at 5:00 pm.
Adeela Shah is a visual practitioner and an academician. She is currently teaching at IVS. Her practice-led research examines the complexities of identity-making, which are politicized by nation building and enforced societal narratives that erase many relevant geometries of interconnected relations.
Babar Sheikh works as a multimedia performance artist, musician, and an educator. He recently won the Glass Lion Award for Change at Cannes for one of his film projects. His work delves into the concepts of devotion, tradition, and faith, within the physical and spiritual framework of Karachi's dargahs, khanqahs, and astanas.
Quratulain Qamar Choudry is a multidisciplinary visual artist, photographer, and educator. She was honoured as a Fulbright Global Fellow in 2010. She investigated the idea of Gendered Time, with a particular focus on women’s leisure moments, accountability for lost and wasted time, and feeling of guilt for being unproductive.”
Artist Talk moderator:
Sadia Salim is a visual artist, designer, and educator. She was the founding director of the Graduate Programme, an interdisciplinary study in critical and creative practice, at Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture.

Closing Ceremony of Flood Resistant House
Our 3rd Year Architecture students are constructing a flood response model house. The aim of this project is to design a low-cost house that is a suitable response in the face of disasters related to climate change, particularly torrential floods.
Bamboo, Brick block, concrete block, and Adobe/ mud were explored as building materials.
Students were asked to think about how houses can be made flood resistant, and whether it is possible to embrace the seasonal floods that occur every year and minimize damage.
The initial designing took place in the studio; the construction of the prototype is happening at the Sculpture Park.
