Postgraduate education is an expanding area of further education in Pakistan.  The Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture is currently offering a PGD in Textile Design and is proud to announce PGD in Photography, PGD in Film and Television and a PGD in Apparel Design. These PGD Programmes are being offered by the Departments of Communication Design and Textile Design. With the establishment of some of the first Postgraduate Diploma Programme in these particular fields, IVS continues to play a pivotal role in the expansion of education in Pakistan.

We are aware that embarking on a postgraduate course is a huge commitment and that students are coming from diverse professional and undergraduate experiences. Therefore, our ethos is to provide students with a high quality education experience that blends practice, theory and research, focusing on equipping students with the skills, knowledge and portfolios to help advance their careers. Postgraduate Diploma courses at the Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture provide an opportunity for students to study a subject in depth and develop specialist knowledge and skills. Our courses are designed, both for recent graduates who wish to progress to more advanced studies or for people who have been working for a number of years who may wish to gain a formal qualification.

As a postgraduate student you will join a community of highly talented and motivated individuals from all over Pakistan at the Indus Valley campus. The Faculty for the PGD programme comprises of committed academicians and renowned professionals from within the various fields. The PGD Programme is a testament to the Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture’s continued role as an institute of excellence, providing professionals with quality education, imparting strong problem solving skills, a wealth of indigenous and international knowledge in conjunction with integral professional ethics and expertise.

Apparel Design

Apparel/Textile industry is an important industry in Pakistan. Textile industry’s potential to use indigenous raw material and conversion of cotton to yarn and fabric to apparel earns valuable foreign exchange for the country along with the creation of substantial employment opportunities.
Postgraduate Diploma in Apparel Design will equip students with quality training to become self-reliant Apparel designers. This diploma also answers the continual demand from the fashion industries for well-trained talent to design garments of all descriptions as it relates to Apparel and Retail Industries.
While the fashion industry is extremely specialized (women’s wear, men’s wear, bridal, children, knitwear etc), this diploma is structured to offer design skills that form the common denominator to all specializations.
PGD Apparel Design will further create an interface between apparel, textile and craft industry, which could revitalize them and in turn benefit the designers greatly by incorporating indigenous methods of weaving, printing and ornamentation to produce contemporary creations of standardized quality. This postgraduate diploma programme is designed to provide its majors with the knowledge, skills, critical thinking ability, and technological competence to enter the fields of fashion and retail in both domestic and international markets.

ELIGIBILITY
The PGD programme requires a Bachelor’s degree in Applied Arts, B.Architecture, Interior Design or 3 years experience in textile/fashion/knitwear. Applicants will be required to go through an interview and a portfolio presentation.

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE
The curriculum for the Diploma models industry standards and requirements of the local and international design/retail outlets. The duration of the proposed course will be 12 months divided into 2 semesters. The proposed programme is a deliberate fusion of Apparel Design and manufacturing, marketing, fashion and retail planning and promotion.

Textile Design

The philosophy of this programme is founded on the belief that textile subjects are complementary and benefit from their interrelationship. This involvement with all three subjects on offer; Print, Weave and Design Intervention gives a rich and versatile education that leads to high quality creativity and innovation. The relationship of a textile design education to any number of design fields; theatre, fashion, ceramics, illustration, architecture, product design , retail together with the textile industries, provide creative opportunities that are second to none.
A one year Post-Graduate Diploma is offered in Textile Design with Print Design, Weaving and Design Intervention as the major components. Students acquire insight and expertise to develop designs appropriate for particular fields including interior and fashion apparel. Traditional textiles and research are used as resource for design.
A personal portfolio is developed in the final semester in preparation for these innovative designers to make highly influential contributions to the textile and fashion worlds.

ELIGIBILITY

The PGD programme suits Bachelor graduate applicants from a wide range of disciplines who have an interest or some experience in Textile or Apparel designs. We also welcome applicants who have reached a comparable level of ability through work experience.

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

In the first semester comprises of 16 weeks, students must complete eight courses. These courses must include 6 core course and 2 electives. The second semester comprises of one core course and one elective followed by an eight week final project.

Photography

The Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture is committed to fostering creative exploration, critical inquiry and development of technical skills. With the establishment of the first postgraduate Diploma Programme in Photography in the country, IVS continues to play a pivotal role in the expansion of education in Pakistan. The PGD in Photography caters to candidates who have some experience in the field of photography through advertising, fashion and design industry or as aspiring entrepreneurs. A self-directed programme, culminating in a final thesis project, the diploma provides a variety of core subjects including commercial, fashion, portraiture, photojournalism and fine art photography to cater to the individual needs of the students and the market.

ELIGIBILITY

Requirement:
A Bachelor’s degree in any field, and a portfolio of
12-15 images.

Prior knowledge or experience in photography is preferable, but candidates from all fields are welcome to apply to the programme. If you have a strong application, but no prior knowledge in the field you will be asked to complete a short introductory course over the summer.

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE
The PGD in Photography is a one year programme offered over two semesters, each 20 weeks long. The core studio, theory and workshop classes will be offered in the evenings from 6 pm to 9 pm from Monday through Thursday. Saturday mornings, 9 am to 12 pm will be an ‘Open Slot’ used in a variety of ways to enhance learning. The photography studio will be open 6 days a week (Monday – Saturday); students will be able to access the space by signing-up for time slots.

Film and Television

Filmmaking is a highly collaborative art form and it is vital that each member of the team understands the process as a whole in order to work effectively. Courses are designed to encourage students to try different aspects of the filmmaking process in order to have a clear understanding of the role each person and each department play. The Curriculum for the Film and Television Post Graduate Diploma is designed to give students a working knowledge of the film and television industries.
The programme offers students a chance to work closely with practitioners and filmmakers. They have the opportunity to emerge with a portfolio of work and creative experience to equip them to join the Film and Television industry and to forge new boundaries and levels of excellence in cinema. Seminars and Master classes are organized to introduce students to the many different areas within the wider umbrella of Filmmaking. These will be conducted by the leading Media industry people: Actors, Producers, Directors, Make-up artists, News Reporters, Documentary Makers, Cinematographers, etc.
The one year long PGD in Film & Television is a very hands-on course designed to give students the skills and practical experience needed to succeed in the world of Film & Television, and as such the curriculum has the ability to evolve, so as to remain current in the fast growing world of the media Industry, both at the domestic and the international front.

ELIGIBILITY

The PGD programme requires a Bachelor’s degree in any discipline. Students should be motivated and committed, experience in Film and Television is optional. Applicants without formal degrees but with comparable level of ability through work experience are also welcome to apply.

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE
This programme is rooted in the belief that cinema is an art form. It is an act of imaginative story-telling that strives to unveil and understand truth in all its complexity, and to creatively express the ambiguous and often contradictory realities that we embody and inhabit. Filmmaking is the nexus of craft, creativity, observation and inquiry. Recently in Pakistan, we are witnessing a boom in the television industry and a revival in filmmaking. We believe that the best of a nation’s cinema and television will reflect its realities whilst imagining a better future.
This one year Post-Graduate Diploma is offered in Film & Television with directing, producing, editing, cinematography, script writing, production design and sound design as major components. of 16 weeks, students must complete eight courses. Six are Comprehensive and two are enhancement. At the end of this semester students will present their film exercises, film projects and production dossiers from each block into a comprehensive portfolio to be submitted to the full-time faculty and/or advisor along with their film journal which they will maintain through the course of the semester. Grading and assessment will be based on student process, technical and conceptual development and involvement in class discussions and critiques. These will be judged from faculty feedback and comments and mid-year portfolio.

A personal portfolio is developed during the course of the year long post Graduate diploma in preparation for these filmmakers to make highly influential contributions to the worlds of Film & Television. The second semester students will work in their area of specialization: Directing, Producing, Editing, Production Design, Scriptwriting, and Production Design. Along with this they will also have one new comprehensive course and three enhancement courses. At the end of the term, students will submit their Film projects, Production Dossiers and Film Journals in the form of a comprehensive portfolio.
Class critiques during Semester II will involve comprehensive discussions of each student’s thesis development. Participation and involvement during critiques, display of a critical understanding of theory will assess the success of each student during these critiques.

Students will also have the opportunity for one-on-on discussions with the faculty and / or advisors. During these meetings, students have the opportunity to discuss their problems, road-blocks and issues which were not address during critiques. They can also use this time to discuss any other ideas / questions and concerns they may have about their process and interests.

The IVS was granted an independent charter by the Government of Sindh in June 1994, thereby empowering
it to award its own degrees. It was the fourth private institution of higher learning in Pakistan to be given degree awarding status.
Admission to the School is strictly based on merit as determined by an aptitude test, an interview process and a weightage criteria.
