
Filmmaking is a highly collaborative art form and it is vital that each member of the team understands the process as a whole in order to work effectively. Courses are designed to encourage students to try different aspects of the filmmaking process in order to have a clear understanding of the role each person and each department play. The Curriculum for the Film and Television Post Graduate Diploma is designed to give students a working knowledge of the film and television industries.
The programme offers students a chance to work closely with practitioners and filmmakers. They have the opportunity to emerge with a portfolio of work and creative experience to equip them to join the Film and Television industry and to forge new boundaries and levels of excellence in cinema. Seminars and Master classes are organized to introduce students to the many different areas within the wider umbrella of Filmmaking. These will be conducted by the leading Media industry people: Actors, Producers, Directors, Make-up artists, News Reporters, Documentary Makers, Cinematographers, etc.
The one year long PGD in Film & Television is a very hands-on course designed to give students the skills and practical experience needed to succeed in the world of Film & Television, and as such the curriculum has the ability to evolve, so as to remain current in the fast growing world of the media Industry, both at the domestic and the international front.
ELIGIBILITY
The PGD programme requires a Bachelor’s degree in any discipline. Students should be motivated and committed, experience in Film and Television is optional. Applicants without formal degrees but with comparable level of ability through work experience are also welcome to apply.
PROGRAMME STRUCTURE
This programme is rooted in the belief that cinema is an art form. It is an act of imaginative story-telling that strives to unveil and understand truth in all its complexity, and to creatively express the ambiguous and often contradictory realities that we embody and inhabit. Filmmaking is the nexus of craft, creativity, observation and inquiry. Recently in Pakistan, we are witnessing a boom in the television industry and a revival in filmmaking. We believe that the best of a nation’s cinema and television will reflect its realities whilst imagining a better future.
This one year Post-Graduate Diploma is offered in Film & Television with directing, producing, editing, cinematography, script writing, production design and sound design as major components. of 16 weeks, students must complete eight courses. Six are Comprehensive and two are enhancement. At the end of this semester students will present their film exercises, film projects and production dossiers from each block into a comprehensive portfolio to be submitted to the full-time faculty and/or advisor along with their film journal which they will maintain through the course of the semester. Grading and assessment will be based on student process, technical and conceptual development and involvement in class discussions and critiques. These will be judged from faculty feedback and comments and mid-year portfolio.
A personal portfolio is developed during the course of the year long post Graduate diploma in preparation for these filmmakers to make highly influential contributions to the worlds of Film & Television. The second semester students will work in their area of specialization: Directing, Producing, Editing, Production Design, Scriptwriting, and Production Design. Along with this they will also have one new comprehensive course and three enhancement courses. At the end of the term, students will submit their Film projects, Production Dossiers and Film Journals in the form of a comprehensive portfolio.
Class critiques during Semester II will involve comprehensive discussions of each student’s thesis development. Participation and involvement during critiques, display of a critical understanding of theory will assess the success of each student during these critiques.
Students will also have the opportunity for one-on-on discussions with the faculty and / or advisors. During these meetings, students have the opportunity to discuss their problems, road-blocks and issues which were not address during critiques. They can also use this time to discuss any other ideas / questions and concerns they may have about their process and interests.
