The School is registered as a not-for-profit, non-commercial
institution and is managed by an Executive Committee through
the Executive Director under the overall control of an independent
Board of Governors comprising of distinguished educationists,
artists, architects, industrialists, bankers and media-men in
addition to the three members nominated by the Governor of
Sindh. The Governor of Sindh is the patron of the school.

The formal four-year programmes in Fine Arts and Design and the five-year programme in Architecture commenced in September 1990 with the admission of 45 students in the first semester. The number has progressively increased and in January 2000, the intake has been 120. Currently, 426 students are enrolled in the School. Twelve batches of Fine Arts and Design students and Eleven batches of Architecture students have graduated.

With the support of philanthropists and well-wishers the School acquired a piece of land in KDA Scheme No.5, Clifton, and built its custom designed campus which became operational in 1994. Shortly afterwards, the School undertook a unique project of relocating the Nusserwanjee Building, a hundred year old landmark of Karachi, the the new campus. This building which is part of Karachi's architectural heritage, was dismantled from its original stone site stone by stone and is now under reconstruction at the School Campus. The four-storey East Wing is expected to be completed by December 2003 and the three-storey West Wing in December 2002. When completed the two wings will give the School an additional space of 25,000 sq. ft.
