Karachi being a small philistine city of traders and businessmen had a reasonably critical mass of artisans interested in the arts and architecture. After partition, Karachi exploded in to a rapidly flourishing metropolis but fortunately became a centre of men of letters, especially poets and critics from all parts of India . Unfortunately the Urdu Department of the University could not develop a mutually beneficial relationship with them. The snobbery and complexes of the professors had a direct impact in keeping these renowned critics, poets and story writers of Urdu at a distance. Moreover there was no concerted effort made by the universities to patronise art and architecture in the city. The first gallery to actually promote art was Indus Gallery which only became a reality through the generous benefaction of one of my students who had became an industrialist. This artistic void was deeply felt in Karachi and eventually a group of altruistic professionals decided to establish an institution, which is known today as the Indus Valley School of Arts and Architecture. This School has had a big impact in nurturing an interest in aesthetic development and various art forms among our youth.
It is very satisfying to see that Indus Valley School has matured into one of the finest institutions of Pakistan and can take pride in its contribution to Pakistani culture. Its graduates are living proof of its commitment to excellence. They are trained not only in technical skills but also exhibit traits which indicate the fruitful development of complete personalities.
I would like to congratulate the faculty for its commitment and sincerity in creating a conducive atmosphere for the development of such wholesome personalities. The students of Indus Valley can rightfully be proud of the fact that they are studying in a centre of excellence, while the founders of this institution deserve our gratitude for the time, effort and resources they have devoted to the school. I am confident that in the coming years, Indus Valley School will continue to grow and create beauty that will enrich all our lives.
